Description: This text was chosen to be part of the set because of the perspective from which the story is told as well as theme in the story. The main character who is a young German girl named, Rose Blanche shows courage and compassion, as she discovers a concentration camp on the outskirts of her town and smuggles food to some of the children in it. This book is a complex picture book that requires students to read not only the text and in between the lines of the text but also the images in order to fully comprehend the story. The higher order thinking and strategies needed to read this text make it a perfect addition to the Holocaust text set.
Differentiation: This book requires students to do a lot of reading between the lines and inferencing, teachers should scaffold students as they read this text so that students may fully understand the message behind the story.
Students will also need to be taught to read both stories, the images and the text. the images show a great deal more than the text says.

* Research the White Rose Society- what did they stand for? Why is Rose Blanche named after this resistance group ?
* Pair this text with The Boy in the Striped Pajamas- how are the characters similar? What do they both represent?
