Description: This text was chosen for the text set because of the perspective from which it is told. This book like, other books in the text set tells the story of the Holocaust from the perspective of a rescuer or people who were willing to risk their lives to help Jewish people hide or escape the Nazi regime. This story is told through the eyes of a japanese boy whose diplomat father took major risks in providing thousands of Jews with visas so they could flee persecution. This is ultimately a story of heroism and racial tolerance which is a message that is so important and one that I hope to instill throughout this text set and study.
Differentiation: The reading level of this book makes it accessible to all students.
Possible Strategies:
* Pair this text to the information on the site 10 People Who Helped Save the Jews During WWII and the online exhbit Flight and Rescue on the United States Memorial Holocaust Museum website.
* Timeline/Visual Representation of Sugihara's life- students can make a prezi, infographic, movie trailer, glolgster, etc to depict the life of Suighara.
* Compare/Contrast and Text-to-Text Connections- compare/connect to other books from the text set, specifically to Schindler's List . Sugihara is often referred to as the Japanese Schindler, how are Sugihara and the Schindler alike?
